Understanding Early Adolescence

Are you the parent of a tween?  If so, you’re probably experiencing a readjustment in your relationship with your emerging teenager.  This time of transition is enough to challenge even the strongest parent-child relationship, and the “when and how’s” of Facebook and cellphones can turn any parent into a serial hand wringer.
Â
Joani Geltman, MSW and expert in Child Development, will speak to 4th and 5th grade parents on the physical, cognitive, and social emotional changes that occur in the tween years, and how these changes affect relationships with parents, friends and school life.
Â
Please join Joanie on Tuesday, January 31 from 6:30 – 8 PM at North Beverly Elementary.  Sponsored jointly by Beverly’s elementary school PTOs, this is a free-to-you event, but you must register in advance on or before January 26.  Contact ptopresident@mycentervilleschool.com for a registration form.

Save Beverly Schools Website

The Save Beverly Schools website is a great resource for parents of school-age children, with a mission aimed at informing and mobilizing Beverly parents to take an active role in all issues related to the funding and operation of the city’s schools.

Launched in the spring of 2008, the site features current and archived articles from local papers (Salem Evening News and The Beverly Citizen), as well as highlights from Beverly School Committee meetings and related.  It is not affiliated with Beverly Public Schools, and was created, designed and is edited by Hannah parent John Hall.

Salem News Seeks Young Weather Artists

The Salem News is seeking weather art from local school children to appear in their daily forecasts.  Each day, a picture displaying a scene similar to the day’s weather is chosen to appear on either the front page or the weather page, along with the child’s name, grade and school.

All types of weather are needed, but they especially want weather typical for the months ahead.  Artwork should be in color and on standard-size paper.  The child’s name, grade and school must be written on the back, and an adult should check spelling and legibility.

Mail weather art to:  The Salem News, Attention Muriel Hoffacker, 32 Dunham Road, Beverly, MA  01915.

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the Teachers, Staff, and PTO of Centerville School we’d like to wish all our students and their families the best during the holiday season.

The holiday break begins with early dismissal on Friday, at noon.  We will have lunch before dismissal.

We look forward to seeing everyone back in 2012!

Scrip cards for the Holidays

Need some gift ideas?  How about stocking stuffers or yankee swap gifts?  There’s still time to order scrip gift cards for the holidays!

We’ve extended the deadline.  Orders received by 2PM on Monday December, 19 will be available for pick up at the school by Thursday, December 22 at 2PM.

Orders can be made online here.  Or you can fill out and return the form available here.

Scrip gift cards are exactly like the gift cards you purchase in stores except that a portion of the cost comes back to Centerville School.  There are lots of choices including Amazon.com, iTunes, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Target, Best Buy, and AMC Theaters.

Also, don’t forget scrip cards after the holidays.  They are great for things you buy every week like gas, groceries, or coffee.  There is no additional cost and it’s an easy way to support the school.
